Learn More About US Pasture-Raised Beef

ButcherBox’s US pasture-raised grain-finished beef comes from cattle that spend the first part of their lives eating grass and forage on pasture. Towards the end of their life, their diet expands to include hay, silage, and grain which is fed to the cattle while on pasture.   This diet produces more marbling, which is the fat within the muscle that gives beef its flavor and tenderness. About 97% of the beef produced in the United States is grain-finished, and a majority are raised using conventional methods, including feedlots. In feedlot production, space can be limited, often leading to overcrowding, poor animal welfare, and the spread of disease.  Pasture-raised grain-finished cattle raised for ButcherBox have continuous access to pasture and are never confined to a feedlot.
About 97% of the beef produced in the United States and sold in grocery stores, is grain-finished, and the majority of cattle are raised using conventional methods, including feedlots.  In feedlot production, space can be limited, often leading to overcrowding, poor animal welfare, and the spread of diseases.  Most of the cattle raised in feedlots, typically receive antibiotics in their feed or water.   US pasture-raised grain-finished cattle raised for ButcherBox, have continuous access to pasture, and are never confined to a feedlot.  Then towards the end of their life, their diet expands to include hay, silage, and grain which is fed to the cattle while on pasture.   The addition of grain produces more marbling, which is the fat within the muscle that gives beef its flavor and tenderness.  Additionally, animals raised for ButcherBox beef products, never receive antibiotics or added hormones ever. Sick animals are treated with antibiotics and are not sold to ButcherBox.  Unless it clearly printed on the package, beef sold at the supermarket, is likely from cattle that were administered antibiotics.  To ensure ButcherBox’s high animal welfare standards are always met, all of our US pasture-raised grain-finished beef is 3rd party animal welfare certified GAP Step 4 by Global Animal Partnerships, one of North America’s largest and most credible animal welfare programs.  Most beef sold in the grocery store does not have any 3rd party animal welfare certification.
All meats, including beef provide a valuable source for nutrients including protein, iron, vitamin B12, and zinc. One of the key differences between our 100% grass-fed and pasture-raised, grain-finished beef is what the cattle eat towards the end of their life. 100% grass-fed cattle tend to be leaner than cattle that have grains incorporated into their diet. Whether or not one product is healthier than the other is dependent on your dietary preferences and health goals.
Historically, we've provided the highest quality 100% grass finished beef in the market, sourced from Australia and the United States. Today, it's clear some of our loyal members would like a beef option that is exclusively a product of the US, with the grain-finished taste they may be more familiar with and the ButcherBox high standards they trust. That's why we're excited to introduce US pasture-raised, grain-finished beef.  Whether you prefer our 100% grass-fed beef or our US pasture-raised grain-finished beef, we aim to bring you and your family options and choices while still being a company that believes in running a business with responsibility and integrity— never compromising our values on animal welfare, the environment, and farmers.
Curated boxes will continue to only include our 100% grass-fed beef products. You can choose to add grain-finished products to your order by switching to the custom box, or adding them as member deals or add-ons where they will be clearly marked.
